Setting up the photogate timer
First, turn the timer on, and set the switch to "GATE". Click the "Reset" button to zero the timer.

The timer will start and stop automatically as the vane on the cart passes through the photogate. You will have to reset the timer after each trial.

The photo at the left displays the time in seconds required for the 0.10 m vane to pass through the photogate when the ramp settings were as depicted below.
Measuring the difference in height.

Place a meter stick as shown in the photo on the left. Measure the height of the ramp itself at the rear of the cart when the cart is lined up on the starting line. The photo on the right indicates the actual measurement, 63.0 cm., for the time recorded above.

The photo below shows how to take a similar measurement for the height of the ramp at the finish line. Note that the measurement must be taken at the point where the back of the vane on the cart passes through the photogate. The photo on the lower right shows the actual measurement for this trial, 18.0 cm.
